Dear Zillow, It’s Not You, It’s Me

Dear Zillow,

We need to talk.

You probably noticed I’ve been… distant. Sure, I still check in from time to time—old habits die hard—but things just don’t feel the same. And with Valentine’s Day around the corner, I feel like I owe you an explanation. So here it is: it’s not you, it’s me.

Okay, fine. Maybe it is you.

I’ll admit it: I was smitten. You were shiny and full of promise, like that mysterious stranger at the bar who seems just a little too good to be true. You offered me leads—so many leads!—and all I had to do was pay up.At first, it felt amazing. “Here they are,” I thought. “My future customers, delivered straight to my inbox! Zillow, you’ve changed the game!”

But it didn’t take long for the cracks to show. Let’s talk about those “leads” for a second. Most of them weren’t buyers—they were just tire-kickers who spent too much time binge-watching HGTV. Half didn’t know what they wanted, and the other half ghosted me faster than a bad first date. Remember that time you sent me a lead for a $50,000 condo… 200 miles outside my market? I was this close to putting my license on Craigslist.

And don’t get me started on your “Premier Agent” system. Paying for exposure? Sure. Competing with three other agents for the same lead? Rude. Do you know how many times I’ve had to tell a buyer, “No, I don’t actually know why my face is on that listing—call Zillow”? It’s embarrassing, honestly.

Zillow, we both know the real reason this is over: you started thinking you were me. When you announced you were getting into the home-buying business, I couldn’t believe it. I thought we had something special, but there you were, flipping houses like you’re Chip and Joanna Gaines. And when your little experiment blew up in your face (we both saw the headlines), I thought you’d learn your lesson.

But no. You doubled down, crawling further into my territory. You started charging more for worse leads, stealing attention from MY listings, and pretending you were some kind of savior for homebuyers. Honestly, the audacity.

Zillow, I’ve come to realize something: I don’t need you. I’ve been out here grinding—hosting open houses, crafting killer marketing strategies, and actually talking to people like a human being. You’re over here charging an arm and a leg for lukewarm leads while I’m building real relationships. I don’t need your overpriced breadcrumbs when I can bake my own bread, thank you very much.

So, here’s the deal. I’m breaking up with you. I’m not going to renew my subscription, I’m not going to click on your “exclusive offer,” and I’m definitely not paying you to slap my photo next to a random MLS listing ever again. I’ve found other ways to meet people who want to buy or sell homes. I’m investing in myself—my brand, my social media, my network. And guess what? It’s working.

And while we’re on the topic, if any agents out there are still in a codependent relationship with Zillow, consider this your intervention. Take a good, hard look at what you’re getting out of it. You might realize like I did, that you deserve so much better.

I’ll always remember the good times (okay, the mediocre times). But it’s over now.

If you need me, I’ll be out there creating extraordinary customer experiences, working with people who actually want to work with me, and, oh yeah, not giving my commission to a tech company that doesn’t even know how to handle a Zestimate.

Sincerely,

Insert Every Agent Here
